It is done! niiconn v6 is up und running

horizontal rule 19 Nov. 2008

After over half a year, endless decisions, infinite hours of designing, coding and tweaking I finally brought version 6 to a release. Well, there a fixes to do, the japanese localization isn’t quite finished and some old posts have to be updated to conform to the new layout. Still, I was so eager to release v6 as I was working on this since quite some time and now am somewhat proud of it. It is a quantum leap forward since version 5.

In the next few days and weeks, I will do tweaks and fixes to the layout and base of the system. I hope to get everything fine until then.

Why not leave me a comment after the break? I’d like to know what you think about the new design. Feedback is very welcome.

GottaGo

horizontal rule 9 Aug. 2008

GottaGo is really worth a note! It is the first iPhone native app for public transportation in Switzerland. First it asks you for the start location and destination. It then gives you info about the commuter trains in the next 10 to 30 minutes which you thek can take. GottaGo incorporates the CoreLocation feature to find out your current location and shows you the nearest train stations. Fantastic!!

You cam download this application in the App Store or via iTunes.

IEEE-1394 Firewire S1600 and S3200 approved

horizontal rule 31 Jul. 2008

The IEEE-1394 protocol better known as Firewire or i.Link gets an update. The S1600 and S3200 specifications are now approved by the, you know, IEEE. The two specs are the logical successors of the currently used S400 and S800 specs (Firewire 400 and 800). The new specs allow speeds of up to 3.2Gbps (about 400MB per second).

The new specs will become available in October this year. A little earlier than the new USB 3.0 spec (you can read more about it here).

Rulers for everyone

horizontal rule 19 Jul. 2008

Omnidea put up a new neat little app called Rulers. An extremely helpful application for graphic and web designers. And the best it’s free.

Shortly after you start Rulers the first time, a horizontal and vertical ruler comes up as an overlay on your desktop together with a little HUD and the current cursor turns into a hair cross. The informations update as you move the hair cross around your desktop. In the app’s preferences you can change options like rulerbackground color, opacity of the rulers and so on.

The only downside here is the hair cross. As it changes the pointer permanently as long as the app is running, I need to get used to it.

This utility is available for Windows and Macintosh.

Mac OSX 10.6 Leopard

With all the fuss about a new 3G iPhone to be announced at the WWDC this year, there is a new rumor spreading that Jobs & Co. might show off a demo of the next iteration of the Mac operating system, namely OS X 10.6. With the three major tracks being announced earlier this year, of which one of the three is Developing for Mac, there could be a good chance that we see a sneak peak of the new system version.

By the way, TUAW is promising that Mac OS X 10.6 shall go Gold Master at the end of this year, and go public on January 2009.

Transfer - Genoco’s new design mockup for the iPhone

horizontal rule 16 Apr. 2008

Transfer

Not long ago, Phil Lu of Genoco came up with an idea to bring your iPhone and a visit in Starbucks together. The idea was to get your Starbucks coffee quick and fast in ordering and paying just with your iPhone in your palm. The cool thing, Phil’s idea involved a payment solution with semacodes, which are commonly used in other countries for underground transportation and so on.

This time he shows us another design mockup called Transfer. It is about an application that holds all the features you need as a photographer in just one place, again your iPhone. This application consists of five major functions, which are: Remote, have full control over your camera via a remote connection. Trigger is also like a remote function with the ability to control your camera over the internet, anywhere you are. The Transfer function allows you to store and backup your data wirelessly over several storage locations. The Preview category let’s you preview your images in multiple ways and the Storage function lets you save your images directly on your iPhone.

What’s so special about these design mockups? Well, it’s the way Phil presents us his ideas. I like his mockups because there’re clean and clever made. It would be cool to see one of his mockups making it into a real application.

When activated, there comes up a new menu bar item called Develop with features like Webinspector, Network timeline, edit CSS in place, custom user agent strings, improved snippet editor and others. A really really nice feature that I’ve waited for to be available in Safari.
